educational technology and its meaning
A lot of people think that educational technology is just about computers, smart boards, LCD projectors and other electronic materials that we could found in the market nowadays and could be used only in a “modern” type of classrooms. Some educators got intimidated when they hear the word technology added to education. They thought that it is a different way of teaching involving and focusing on modern technology. The reason might be they are not fully aware on the real meaning and essence of educational technology in the teaching-learning process. They don’t know that they already using/applying the concepts of it even in their simple ways of teaching.
Educational technology (EdTech) has a broad scope of idea with different features. Just like other sciences, it is founded and supported by different theories, set of knowledge and principles. However, it is not just an “idea” but an actual application and implementation of those ideas on the field of education that could be a solution to the issues and problems of the current educational system. Moreover, EdTech incolves materials that could enhance the teaching and learning process. Those materials include chalk boards, white boards, visuals, videos and audios, computers and other devices that could be used by educators to facilitate a meanigful and effective learning experience.
Moreover, EdTech could be considered as one of the keys in identifying, analyzing and solving problems related to human learning. It is also applied in order to provide better and appropriate ways of teaching depending on the capabilities and interest of the learner. Through the use of EdTech, the teaching process would be more beneficial for the learner and not only for the convenience of the educator. For example, there are lessons that could be address to students using different activities. Based on Edgar Dale’s Cone of Experience, each individual can learn efficiently in different ways thus, different teaching approaches should be used depending on the learner as well as the requirements and objectives of the activity. The cone of experience has a great part in EdTech. It reminds the educators that their goal is to make their students learn effectively based on each and everyone’s individuality.
Lastly, in relation to Dale’s Cone of Experience, Edtech promotes variation of activities that could build up the interest of learners with different learning styles in their own learning process. It also helps educators in catering all the needs of the learner in all of his or her domain of development through different effective approaches. EdTech is very helpful in maximizing the development of an individual not only in academics but in all aspects of life because of its practical applications and its benefits.
